Octopus Kraken OCT018 Review: A Surprising Seiko-Inspired Diver Under $200

When I first came across the Octopus Kraken OCT018 on AliExpress, I honestly did not know what to expect. This brand occasionally pops up and is often labeled as just another “AliExpress diver,” but I had never tried one myself. At around 200 dollars, it seemed like a low-risk experiment for a mechanical watch with decent specs. After wearing it for a while, my conclusion is this: it is not perfect, but it delivers some unexpected surprises.

Specifications

Let us start with the numbers: the case measures 39.5 millimeters including the bezel (39 millimeters without), 47.2 millimeters lug to lug, 12.6 millimeters thick, with a 20 millimeter lug width. Inside ticks the reliable Seiko NH35 movement, hidden behind a solid caseback. Water resistance is rated at 200 meters, thanks to a screw-down crown. The inclusion of a sapphire crystal at this price point is another highlight. The bezel has a glossy, ceramic-like finish (though not officially stated). For lume, Octopus uses C3 Super-LumiNova, applied to the hands, markers, and bezel pip. On paper, the specs easily meet expectations for a diver in the sub-200 dollar range.

Dial and Hands

The first thing that caught my eye was the textured dial, reminiscent of the Omega Aqua Terra’s teak pattern. The grooves are not just printed — they have real depth, creating a sense of dimensionality that is rare at this price. The dial shifts between steel-gray and blue hues depending on the light. Outdoors, it takes on different personalities: sometimes sharp and silvery, other times deep and oceanic. The “Octopus Kraken” logo sits cleanly at 12 o’clock, balanced by “Automatic 200m” at 6. The restrained printing keeps the design minimal and uncluttered. The rectangular applied indices are polished with impressive precision, slightly enlarged at 12, 3, 6, and 9 for visual balance. The baton-style hands are faceted, with brushed centers and polished edges that catch the light beautifully — workmanship that feels beyond the price bracket. Under close inspection, the markers and hands look sharper than many competitors in the same tier. At 4:30, there is a date window. Normally I dislike off-center dates, but here it blends in harmoniously. Its small size avoids disrupting the dial symmetry, adding a subtle detail instead.

Case and Bezel

The case design draws inspiration from the Seiko 62MAS, but Octopus added its own flair. The sharply chamfered lugs give the case a barrel-like silhouette. Circular brushing on the top and horizontal brushing on the sides help visually slim the watch. While the case is 12.6 millimeters thick, these details make it wear thinner on the wrist. The bezel action is a highlight: 120 crisp clicks with minimal play, feeling more solid than some microbrands. The only downside? Mine arrived slightly misaligned, by a hairline — not a dealbreaker, but something detail-focused buyers will notice. The unsigned crown has fine knurling and screws in and out smoothly, with no gritty resistance — excellent for an NH35-equipped diver. On the wrist, the midcase curvature hugs comfortably, and the chamfers reduce visual bulk. On my 6.5-inch wrist, it feels well-proportioned: neither bulky nor too dainty.

Bracelet and Straps

The bracelet uses a five-link design, alternating brushed and polished surfaces for extra shine. Personally, I prefer traditional three-link or beads-of-rice styles, but this one wears lightweight and comfortable, without the cheap rattling you sometimes get at this price. The butterfly clasp with push buttons offers micro-adjustment, and it works well enough. A thoughtful touch is the dual lug holes: the inner holes create a near-integrated fit, while the outer ones leave room for thicker straps. This makes the OCT018 a genuine strap monster. On a yellow silicone strap, it takes on a playful, summer-ready look that highlights the lume’s yellow tones. With brown leather, it becomes warm and vintage-inspired. A blue stingray strap pushes it into sporty territory, tying in with the bezel perfectly.

Lume

The C3 lume is initially impressive — brighter than my Seiko 62MAS at full charge. It glows with a strong green-yellow light that ensures great legibility in the dark. The issue is how it looks in daylight. The slightly yellowish lume paint does not quite harmonize with the cool-toned blue dial (though this would not be a problem with the black dial version). Under closer inspection, the lume on the hands also looks a bit less even than on the indices and bezel pip. Functionally, however, it works just fine for nighttime use.

Pros

Ideal dimensions and comfortable case design Finishing exceeds expectations (indices, hands, and dial details are excellent) Solid bezel action with crisp feedback Unique textured dial breaks away from cookie-cutter designs Thoughtful details like dual lug holes Strong value: sapphire crystal, 200 meter water resistance, and NH35 movement under 200 dollars

Cons

Yellowish lume does not perfectly match the blue dial Bezel alignment may vary Quality control could be more consistent Bracelet design may not appeal to everyone

Conclusion

The Octopus Kraken OCT018 delivers more surprises than I expected. What I assumed would be just another “photo-friendly but cheap-feeling diver” turned out to be a well-built, comfortable, and genuinely fun watch to wear. Yes, the lume tone and bezel alignment are not flawless, but given the price, those quirks are forgivable. If you like the 62MAS case style or want a budget-friendly diver with personality, the OCT018 is worth serious consideration. Personally, if I were to buy again, I would lean toward the black dial version to avoid the lume mismatch. Still, even this blue dial model has earned more wrist time than I imagined. With its mix of charm, versatility, and solid specs, it redefines what an AliExpress diver can be.
