Octopus Kraken OCT005 Review: A Value-Packed Bronze Homage Watch

As someone who has been collecting affordable mechanical watches for years, I recently picked up the Octopus Kraken OCT005. This model has gained plenty of attention online—recommended by reviewers and discussed widely in watch forums. I’d like to combine my own experience with feedback from the community to provide a more well-rounded review. First Impressions & Packaging

The OCT005’s presentation exceeded my expectations. The box feels more substantial than the flimsy cardboard packaging often seen with budget AliExpress watches. Inside, you’ll find the watch, a warranty card, a cleaning cloth, and a detailed manual. For a watch under $250, this packaging clearly shows that Octopus Kraken is aiming to build a legitimate microbrand identity rather than being “just another Chinese homage brand.”

Case & Dimensions

The OCT005 draws clear inspiration from the Oris Divers Sixty-Five, yet it doesn’t come across as a simple copy. The case, crown, and buckle are all made of USN bronze, while the outer ring of the caseback is stainless steel—an intentional design choice to prevent skin irritation from bronze. Here are the measurements: Thickness: 12.3 mm Diameter: 39.8 mm (43.5 mm including crown) Lug width: 20 mm Weight: ~81 g (with leather strap)

Thanks to its curved lugs, the watch sits snugly on the wrist. On my 7-inch wrist, it wears comfortably—neither bulky nor undersized.

Movement

Powering the watch is the PT5000 automatic movement, a high-beat clone of the ETA 2824-2. My unit gains about +1 second per day, which is impressive for this price range. It supports hacking and hand-winding, with a generally smooth feel. However, because the PT5000 typically includes a date function and this model doesn’t use it, there is a ghost date position on the crown. It creates a “dead” crown setting during adjustment. While slightly disappointing, it doesn’t undermine the overall performance.

Dial & Crystal

I went with the red dial version, and it’s a stunner. The railway minute track, lumed Arabic numerals, and gold-tone hands pair beautifully with the bronze case. The overall design feels harmonious and deliberate. The highlight here is the double sapphire construction: a domed sapphire crystal up front and a sapphire display caseback. Considering that many watches at this price point still use mineral glass, this is a huge plus. The lume performance is also outstanding. Forum users consistently note that its brightness and longevity are on par with Seiko—and even comparable to some entry-level Swiss brands. That’s rare for an AliExpress watch.

Strap

The included leather strap exceeded expectations. It’s thick, soft, and features quick-release spring bars. This isn’t the kind of cheap strap you throw away immediately. The signed bronze buckle adds another touch of detail. That said, strap fitment is not perfect. At the lugs, there’s a bit of looseness, which makes it feel less secure than it should. Several forum members have mentioned the same issue, suggesting either a strap swap or thicker spring bars for a better fit.

Water Resistance

The watch is rated at 100m of water resistance. While not ISO-certified, the screw-down crown, screw-in caseback, and well-seated crystal make the claim believable for swimming. Of course, don’t take it into the pool with the leather strap.

Community Feedback

Across forums and watch groups, the OCT005 is regarded as one of Octopus Kraken’s most successful releases. The general sentiment is positive, with praise focused on: Solid build quality – Many owners appreciate the sharp finishing and sturdy casework. Bronze character – Collectors enjoy the fast-developing patina that gives each piece unique personality. Value proposition – While not an Oris, many feel it delivers 80–90% of the experience at less than 20% of the price. Criticisms tend to focus on: Rising prices – At $210–$220, some buyers feel the watch is losing the “AliExpress value edge,” especially with limited after-sales service. Strap fitment – A recurring issue, as noted earlier. Ghost date position – Irritating for perfectionists, though not a major flaw for most. Pros & Cons Pros Bronze case with stainless steel caseback for comfort Double sapphire crystals (front & back) PT5000 high-beat movement with excellent accuracy Strong lume, comparable to mainstream brands Comfortable leather strap with detailed bronze buckle Premium-style packaging Cons Strap fitment could be better Ghost date crown position Higher price compared to other AliExpress offerings After-sales and returns are less convenient

Final Verdict

The Octopus Kraken OCT005 is easily one of the most well-executed bronze homage watches under $250. It feels solid, looks distinctive, and the PT5000 delivers excellent timekeeping. While there are minor flaws, its design, finishing, and wrist presence make it more than worth the asking price.

Would I recommend it? Yes—if you’re comfortable with the uncertainties of buying on AliExpress. If comprehensive warranty support is a priority, then a domestic or international microbrand might suit you better. But if you want an affordable, well-made bronze watch with strong character, the OCT005 absolutely deserves your attention.
