Octopus Kraken OCT-006 Watch – A Genuine Hands-On Experience

As an ordinary watch enthusiast (not a professional reviewer), I wanted to share my real-world impressions after wearing the Octopus Kraken OCT-006 for an extended period the pleasant surprises, the minor flaws, and the unexpected details that emerged over time.

First Impressions & Overall Specifications

My first encounter with the OCT-006 was full of pleasant surprises. With a retail price of around $288 USD, and frequent promotional discounts from the brand, it offers impressive value. The model comes in various dial and bezel color combinations, allowing users to pick one that best fits their personal style. Core specifications: Case: 316L stainless steel Crystal: Sapphire glass Water resistance: 300 meters (screw-down crown and case back) Movement: PT5000 or SW200 automatic (optional) Dimensions & Wearing Comfort Bezel diameter: 40.3 mm Case thickness: 13.4 mm Lug width: 20 mm Lug-to-lug: 45.8 mm Weight (rubber strap): Approx. 91 g

In practice, the watch wears smaller than it looks on paper. The inward-curved case design helps it hug the wrist comfortably. On my 19 cm wrist, the OCT-006 feels perfectly balanced neither bulky nor top-heavy. Comfort is excellent. It also pairs beautifully with a range of straps: vintage leather, canvas, Milanese mesh, and NATO. Personally, I find the black or khaki leather and steel mesh straps particularly elegant.

Case Finishing

The finishing deserves high praise. The case is fully polished, and the workmanship is immaculate, with no visible imperfections. Even the lugs and crown guards feature mirror polishing, creating a luxurious gleam under light. The engraved octopus logo on the crown adds a distinctive touch. On the case back, the octopus and anchor motif is deeply etched, surrounded by engraved specs and functional tool slots giving a strong and reliable impression.

Bezel Characteristics

This part is both a highlight and an area for improvement. The OCT-006 features a sapphire bezel insert (confirmed by diamond tester), and the entire bezel is lumed. The slightly domed “bubble-style” bezel refracts light beautifully from different angles, while the 15/30/45 numerals are crisply printed with near-perfect alignment.

However, grip is somewhat lacking the side is smooth, and the gear teeth are only on the upper edge, making it harder to turn. The 120-click mechanism feels solid with decent resistance, but requires more force than usual. Between 3 and 6 o’clock, there’s a faint “double-click” sound, though operation remains smooth and precise overall.

Crystal & Visual Distortion

The top-hat sapphire crystal has a subtle dome edge that produces minor distortion at certain angles, but central legibility is excellent. The blue anti-reflective coating performs well reflections are effectively controlled under most lighting conditions, ensuring clear readability.

Dial & Hands

The deep gloss-black dial is available in two configurations: Diamond 12 o’clock marker with baton markers at 6 and 9 (the version reviewed here) Rectangular markers with red accents The prominent “No Radiations” logo may divide opinions, but I personally find it acceptable. The print quality is crisp, and all markings align perfectly. The white lacquered hands contrast sharply against the black dial, offering excellent legibility. However, the lume color tones differ slightly among the dial, hands, and bezel a minor inconsistency. Lume Performance

Lume brightness is decent initially especially on the hands and dial but fades rather quickly. The bezel lume lasts a bit longer, yet also diminishes to near invisibility after some time. For a dive or sports watch, the lume performance is acceptable but not exceptional.

Movement & Operation

This model houses the PT5000 automatic movement (28,800 bph, ~40-hour power reserve). In my testing, performance was stable and timekeeping accurate. The screw-down crown, though a bit slippery due to its shallow engraving, still operates confidently. The threading feels solid and reassuring. First position: Date adjustment Second position: Time setting (hacking supported) Everything behaves as expected for a PT5000 reliable and consistent.

Strap & Rubber Quality

The stock FKM rubber strap is a standout feature. It tapers from 20 mm to 18 mm, feels soft yet durable, and includes quick-release spring bars. The buckle engraved with the octopus logo is nicely executed, and the multiple holes allow fine adjustment. The quality is so impressive that I even considered buying another one for my other watches. Community Feedback

On Reddit, several users noted that the OCT-006 wears similarly to the original Blancpain Fifty Fathoms “No Radiations”, with daily deviation as low as +3 seconds. On WatchUseek’s “Fifty Fathoms homage” thread, the model has also received positive user feedback, praised for its finishing and specifications despite limited reviews. My experience aligns with these sentiments the OCT-006 stands out in its class for refinement and value.

Pros & Cons Summary

Pros: Excellent case finishing and craftsmanship Premium sapphire bezel with full lume Solid construction and comfortable wear Reliable PT5000 movement High-quality, comfortable rubber strap Cons: Bezel grip could be improved Lume fades too quickly Slight lume color mismatch Minor bezel “double-click” between 3–6 o’clock

Crown engraving too shallow, slightly slippery

Final Verdict

The Octopus Kraken OCT-006 delivers a highly satisfying ownership experience through its superb finishing, refined details, and dependable movement. Although the bezel handling and lume longevity could be improved, these shortcomings are easily outweighed by its overall performance and quality.

If you’re seeking a well-built, affordable, and tastefully executed dive watch with a homage heritage, the OCT-006 deserves serious consideration. It’s not flawless but for its price, it’s remarkably impressive.
