Octopus Kraken OCT-008 Watch Review: A Remarkable Tribute to the Black Bay 58
When searching for the perfect homage to the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight, I explored nearly every popular option from San Martin to Thorn but none truly satisfied me. Although I had long known about the Octopus Kraken OCT-008, I hesitated due to its limited reviews and roughly $300 price tag. After finally purchasing and wearing it for several months, one question remains: Why didn’t I buy it sooner? This is exactly the watch I’d been looking for.
First Impressions & Build Quality
From the moment I unboxed the OCT-008, the craftsmanship immediately impressed me. The finishing quality recalls that of San Martin but avoids the latter’s sometimes overly sharp edges an important advantage. The brushed case surfaces are even and finely textured, while the polished bevels are crisp and precise, rivaling watches far above its price range. The proportions are ideal what I’d call the “golden size zone” making it suitable for most wrists. Downturned lugs ensure excellent comfort and balance. The screw-down crown is perfectly sized, with well-defined knurling and smooth, precise operation.
Bezel, Crystal & Dial
Bezel The OCT-008 features a matte ceramic bezel, a design choice I personally love. Compared to glossy bezels, it feels more understated and refined. The printed numerals and markers are done in a subtly aged “vintage beige” tone that complements the dial text beautifully, while the red triangle at 12 o’clock adds a pop of color and character. The bezel action is excellent120 crisp, evenly spaced clicks, solid and confident in feel. The coin-edge grip provides ample traction but remains smooth to the touch. There’s a slight amount of back-play between clicks, but once seated, it locks securely in place. Crystal The watch sports a “Top Hat” sapphire crystal with a light blue anti-reflective coating. While its curved profile naturally introduces some reflections, overall glare control is very good, and the blue tint is subtle and tastefully matched with the black dial.Dial & Hands
The matte black dial offers a fine, grainy texture that harmonizes with the bezel. The tone difference between the two is minimal and hardly noticeable. All printed elements are sharp and clean, with perfectly aligned text and logo. The brand logo, though slightly prominent, feels well-proportioned and doesn’t overpower the dial. The applied hour markers stand out beautifully against the matte background, creating excellent depth. Even under magnification, dust and imperfections are practically nonexistent. The hands are finished to the same high standard polished and precisely edged.
Lume Performance
The lume performance of this watch is among the best in its price range. Its BGW9 luminous coating easily surpasses my Citizen Promaster (an ISO-certified dive watch) in both brightness and longevity. It charges almost instantly no need for strong light exposure. I’ve often walked from a bright room into darkness and found the dial glowing like a miniature lighthouse. Even in daylight, a faint afterglow remains visible. For a $300 diver, the lume is simply outstanding.Movement & Accuracy
Inside beats the PT5000 automatic movement. While some enthusiasts express skepticism toward this caliber, my experience has been entirely positive. Timekeeping is remarkably accurate, and the 28,800 vph high-beat rate ensures a smooth sweep. My unit runs at about ±3 seconds per day, which is superb. I suspect Octopus Kraken performs manual regulation before shipping, as my previous Kraken watch showed similarly consistent accuracy. This level of precision and reliability is rare in this price category.Bracelet & Clasp
The bracelet is well-made and operates smoothly. Its rivet-style design adds a nostalgic vintage charm some may not like it, but I personally do. One minor drawback is the dual-screw system used for link removal, which requires two screwdrivers. Slightly inconvenient, but since you only do it once, it’s a small issue. The clasp includes four micro-adjust holes, though the large rivet ends make only the two outermost holes truly usable a design oversight. Fortunately, I found my perfect fit on the second hole. The brand has mentioned plans to improve this system with a quick-adjust clasp in future models, which would be a welcome upgrade. Aside from these small quirks, I have no complaints. Once on the wrist, you’ll quickly forget its price the quality feels far beyond expectations.
Community Feedback
On the WatchUseek forum, one user who owns both the black and white OCT-008 versions commented: “The value for money is excellent the quality easily rivals San Martin.” Another user on Reddit’s r/ChineseWatches subreddit wrote: “This watch is an incredible value build quality, specifications, and movement performance are all impressive.” These opinions mirror my own. Many users mention wearing the Kraken more often than their higher-end watches, with some even wishing for a future “sterile dial” version (without branding).
Pros & Cons
Pros: Exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail Premium-feeling matte ceramic bezel Outstanding lume strength and longevity PT5000 movement offers precise and stable accuracy Perfect case proportions; very comfortable to wear High-quality dial and hands Cons: Logo slightly too prominent for some tastes Minor color difference between bezel and dial Dual-screw link system makes sizing fiddly Limited micro-adjust range on the clasp Slight bezel back-play (doesn’t affect usability)
Conclusion: A Dive Watch Worth Owning
As a long-time watch enthusiast, I can confidently say that the Octopus Kraken OCT-008 is one of the finest Black Bay 58-inspired watches I’ve ever worn. In terms of design, lume performance, and movement accuracy, it far exceeds expectations for a $300 timepiece. If you’re seeking a BB58 homage that perfectly balances quality and value, the OCT-008 deserves serious consideration. All you’ll need is a little patience when adjusting the bracelet and a willingness to embrace its slightly bold logo. Beyond that, it’s virtually flawless.
